Sadly Persuasion, not only the worst Austen adaptation but one of the worst movies in recent memory, delivers on all the agony and none of the hope. More recently, Autumn DeWilde’s 2020 take on Emma starred Anya Taylor-Joy as that endearingly pushy heroine, and just this year Andrew Ahn’s Fire Island restaged Pride and Prejudice against the 21 st-century backdrop of that queer haven. In 2016, Whit Stillman’s Love and Friendship reimagined Austen’s epistolary novel Lady Susan as a witty, bitchy sex comedy. Amy Heckerling’s classic 1995 rom-com Clueless transplanted the plot of Emma into a Southern California high school. But I approached Persuasion, Netflix’s adaptation of Austen’s final completed novel, thinking instead of the best-known phrase from that less-often-quoted work: “I am half agony, half hope.” Austen’s keen-eyed comedies of manners have lent themselves to countless effective adaptations, some set in the books’ own Regency era, some updated to a modern setting. It is a truth universally acknowledged that every essay relating to the work of Jane Austen must kick off with those words from the opening line of Pride and Prejudice.

London and Drew were high school rivals, and their story starts at their high school reunion. The Hookup Plan may actually be my favorite of the series. I’ve loved the Boyfriend Project series from the beginning and couldn’t wait to read London’s story–especially because enemies to lovers is my favorite trope! The Hookup Plan can be read as a standalone, but since London’s friendship with Samiah and Taylor plays such a big part in her life, it’s worth it to read the earlier books in the series to see how they all met. Because while sleeping with the enemy is one thing, falling for him is definitely not part of the plan. Worse, Drew is doing everything he can to show her that he’s a decent guy who actually cares. Because she’s found out the real reason Drew’s back in Austin: to decide whether her beloved hospital remains open. Now London is certain the road to hell is paved with good sex. But no one-least of all London-expected it to go down at her high school reunion with Drew Sullivan, millionaire, owner of delicious abs, and oh yes, her archnemesis. According to her friends Samiah and Taylor, what London really needs is a casual hookup. Successful pediatric surgeon London Kelley just needs to find some balance and de-stress. Maybe this was original when it was first published in 1992, but there have been so many fairy tale retellings in recent years that I suspect there are probably some better ones out there. The only thing that's a little different is that when the Prince's footmen come looking for Cinderella, her family shoves her in the cellar and her foot gets caught sticking out of the cellar door when the stepsisters fight over the glass flipper and drop it, it lands squarely on her foot, fitting perfectly. This is just "Cinderella" but with penguins in all the roles. This book just didn't get there for me, as it's a basic retelling with very few changes from the original and the illustrations are nothing special. Either that, or the illustrations need to be spectacular. Cinderella Penguin is going to the ball! The following is an exclusive excerpt from Five Survive, by Holly Jackson, a whip-smart new YA thriller with tons of humor and plenty to say. For the sheer pleasure of its prose alone this book is hard to beat.Īngela Carter is its presiding fairy godmother. Just like the tale-tellers she celebrates in this mammoth study, From the Beast to the Blonde, she's a weaver of enchantments, each sentence a silken knot charming you further into her web of meanings which she ravels and unravels with dizzying speed and skill. She writes so beautifully that I am sure even her VAT returns are a joy to behold. Her arguments are never cold and dry, but persuasive, cajoling, even seductive. She bestows these gifts of understanding and insight with tremendous enthusiasm. She brings the fruits of scholarly labours, her own and others', to a wide modern audience. She steps from scholarship to popular culture and back again. As much as she deconstructs the myths of Western culture (the Virgin Mary, Joan of Arc, the female warrior, the ambiguities of allegory and virtue posed as female) she reassembles them so that we can not only see how they're made but enjoy their lasting power and knowledge. To play with fashion is to play with one’s representation in the world ”, he notes. “ Fashion has always been a barometer for measuring privilege, power, class and freedom.
